M.Ed. LA Sonderpädagogische Förderung - Erweiterungsfach Deutsche Gebärdensprache

Course description

The master’s programme provides students with the fundamental specialist and didactical skills for the desired teaching profession in German sign language. This course is an enhancement subject in teacher education for special needs schools (sonderpädagogische Förderung) with a teaching specialisation (Förderschwerpunkt - FSP) in listening and communication. The master’s programme supplements and consolidates the skills in German sign language that were acquired by students with a teaching specialisation (Förderschwerpunkt - FSP) in listening and communication during their bachelor’s degree in teacher education for special needs schools (sonderpädagogische Förderung). As the teaching subject German Sign Language is not yet obligatory on the school curriculum in all German federal states, it is offered as an enhancement subject.

The master’s programme aims to provide students with the in-depth theoretical and practical skills and expertise necessary to work independently as a teacher in special needs schools (sonderpädagogische Förderung) in the teaching subject German Sign Language or to pursue a profession in the public or private education sector.

The master’s programme covers German sign language, its forms of application and the culture and identity of hearing-impaired people and their bearing on society and history. A special focus is placed on issues related to the teaching of this content to hearing-impaired children and young people. These are examined using insights from teaching methodology with respect to sign language and culture in the context of hearing loss, as well as from linguistic research – especially in a multilingual context.

Students acquire a total of 60 credit points on this course.
